This past weekend, Bloom Energy was the Presenting Host of the 3rd annual Stars and Strides Delaware 5K and Family Fun Day. With the help of over 30 sponsors and community partners over the past two years, we have raised over $80,000 to support Delaware’s veterans and military families. This year alone, over 450 community members participated, and together, we raised more than $50,000 to support our beneficiary organizations: Delaware National Guard Youth Foundation, Stop Soldier Suicide, and The Food Bank of Delaware.

Bloom Energy’s 3rd Annual Stars & Strides Delaware 5K Starting line

Bloom sees these donations as meaningful investments in our community. Dollars raised and contributed will support high-impact initiatives championed by these three beneficiary organizations. For the Delaware National Guard Youth Foundation, our investment will fund scholarships and educational programs for at-risk youth and support the ChalleNGe Program, which focuses on leadership development, job skills, and responsible citizenship. At Stop Soldier Suicide, our contribution will cover over 400 hours of clinical support for veterans and service members, with an emphasis on suicide-specific counseling, mental healthcare, and outreach programs connecting at-risk individuals with vital resources. For Food Bank Delaware, Bloom’s investment will fund over 40,000 meals for local families and initiatives like the Mobile Pantry and Backpack Program, which supply children with food during weekends and holidays when school meals are unavailable.

Bloom Energy’s 3rd Annual Stars & Strides Delaware 5K high five

Following the Stars and Strides Delaware 5K Fun Run, Bloom was the lead sponsor of the University of Delaware’s Military Appreciation Day Football Game against the University of Rhode Island. During the game, our veterans and active military were recognized in many ways. Bloom Energy employees and representatives of our beneficiary organization had the opportunity to participate in the on-field celebrations.

The weekend culminated in a $5,500 check from Bloom Energy presented to the Newark Morning Rotary Club to support its Flags For Heroes program. This program expands our impact to veteran and first responder organizations, including the Newark Police Athletic League, Stop Soldier Suicide, and Beds 4 Vets.

At Bloom Energy, we understand the importance of expressing thanks and gratitude for the profound sacrifices veterans and military families make for our country. We hope that you can find a way to express thanks to the veterans in your life this Veterans Day as well.

We are in unprecedented times.  The need for low and zero carbon power has never been greater, the demand more palpable and yet the challenges so great. The remaining carbon budget, the net amount of CO2 that can still be emitted without hitting a particular global warming threshold, is becoming strikingly smaller each passing year.

There is some uncertainty in the carbon budget, based on the associated warming trajectory, but the reality is sobering. The latest analysis in the journal Nature suggests that for a 50% chance of keeping warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius, the carbon budget is approximately 250 GtCO2, equal to approximately six years of current CO2 emissions (source). This new figure is half the size of the estimated carbon budget in 2020 and reinforces the urgency to act.

In last year’s Sustainability Report, we devoted time to address the importance of the concept of the Time Value of Carbon, which places a premium on near-term climate action considering the uncertainty and risk associated with the pace and extent of climate action. Bloom has long been an advocate of pragmatic, near-term emission reductions, which is why we provide avoided emissions modeling in our annual sustainability report. This latest analysis tells us there has never been a more important time to act quickly, decisively, and at scale to achieve emissions reductions wherever possible, but particularly in the energy sector, which contributes three quarters of global carbon emissions (source).

The world is rightfully focused on a long-term shift to renewable solutions, but there are very significant barriers to the speedy transformation of the system that are misaligned with the realities of our remaining carbon budget. We are struggling to interconnect new projects, build the high voltage transmission capacity needed to move renewable power to load centers and integrate firm baseload power solutions generally. Our policy preferences seem to suggest that we have until 2045 or 2050 to make the necessary changes. The reality is that we now have until 2030…maybe. In order to extend our time horizon and ration our remaining carbon budget to buy the energy sector and the world time for systemic evolution, we need to find emission reductions, and we need to find them now.

So, this Earth Day, we are releasing our fourth sustainability report highlighting ongoing efforts to drive near-term impact, transform the energy sector, and evolve our company in response to this historic moment. The report outlines our strategic approach, highlights our ongoing product innovation, details our social and environmental impact and breaks down how our company is evolving for scale. Three important topics covered in the report are linked to broader themes in the industry and policy environment: avoided emissions, climate risk and a just transition.

Avoided Emissions

Each Energy Server deployment displaces power supplied to our customers from an alternative source, typically centralized power grids. Each year, we calculate the avoided emissions from our projects using project-based approaches outlined in the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol (source). This year our net emissions were -992,481 tonnes of CO2e from our projects with another 120,000 tonnes avoided from our certified gas program.

With the creation of lifecycle accounting requirements from the federal government to facilitate distribution of project support from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), acceleration of 24/7 carbon free energy goals, the GHG Protocol is poised to evaluate the addition of an avoided emissions accounting framework within its Scope 2 guidance revision.  This is something we at Bloom wholeheartedly support.  Learn more about our approach to this important topic here.

Climate Risk

A new addition to our 2023 report is our first forward scenario analysis focused on quantifying inherent physical climate risks and our exposure to carbon pricing across a sample of our facilities, projects, and supply chain.

We used the Shared Socioeconomic Pathways scenarios released along with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s sixth assessment report published in 2021 to inform the analysis. Our results demonstrate the magnitude of potential impact across each scenario and time horizon, providing insight into the extent of risks posed at the different locations as well as the change from historic data. Our assessments target 2030 and 2050 milestones at 13 Bloom business locations in the U.S. and internationally.

As we look ahead, there are new regulatory requirements affecting Bloom and all other large companies in the U.S. Both the state of California and the Securities and Exchange Commission have mandated more comprehensive reporting requirements in the last few months.  Both regulatory disclosure programs are focused on climate related risk reduction and our efforts to deepen our climate risk reporting are designed to get ahead of these requirements and advance our understanding of how and when climate related risks will impact our business.

Just Transition

Finally, Bloom is working to develop partnerships in the various communities in which it operates. These are relationships we hope will help drive ideal outcomes for workers, community members, businesses, and local governments that have been impacted negatively by the combustion of fossil fuels.

We celebrated our 10th anniversary at our Delaware assembly facility. In that time, our local workforce has grown to nearly 800 from 1, revolutionizing a legacy automotive facility into a facility driving the clean energy economy. Our employees successfully delivered our 15,000th Energy Server™, the solid oxide fuel cell equipment that has been the centerpiece of our commitment to making clean, reliable electricity affordable to all. We spent 2023 talking about the work being done in Delaware and the colleagues who make it happen and we go further in this year’s sustainability report.

We have also expanded our production capacity at our Fremont, Ca., manufacturing facility and are very pleased to report that our application for a Qualifying Advanced Energy Project Credit Allocation under Internal Revenue Code Section 48C(e) for Fremont was granted at $75,300,000.

We appreciate the opportunity to highlight the important work we do each year as we grow our company into a leader in the energy transition.  Thank you for your interest and engagement.

Bloom Energy is proud to announce that our Chief Technical Officer, Dr. Ravi Prasher, has been elected to the prestigious National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Membership in the NAE is one of the highest professional honors for engineers. It’s also highly exclusive, with new initiates elected to the organization by current members to honor their outstanding contributions to “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.” In their announcement, the NAE honored Prasher specifically for his “development of thermal management technologies for microelectronics and the decarbonization of thermal energy systems.”

“Cooling and heating accounts for roughly 50 percent of end use of energy and are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions,” said Prasher. “Additionally, rising temperatures are significantly driving up the demand for cooling. Today, virtually all cooling is enabled by using electricity. Big power users, such as data centers use up to 40 percent of their electricity for cooling. The electrically enabled cooling uses hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), highly potent greenhouse gases, as refrigerants. Therefore, I am humbled by this honor from NAE for acknowledging my contributions to decarbonizing this sector.”

Prasher added “One of the main reasons I decided to join Bloom Energy as CTO in 2022 was to integrate advanced combined cooling and heating options to Bloom’s robust Energy Server platform.”

“Ravi’s election to the National Academy of Engineering is a testament to his unparalleled expertise and dedication to advancing engineering excellence,” said KR Sridhar, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of Bloom Energy and NAE member himself. “His contributions have been instrumental in driving Bloom Energy’s innovation and leadership in the energy sector. He led the development of our advanced combined heat and power system which enables net-zero cooling and heating needs for end customers such as data centers and the industrial sector. It also eliminates the need for using HFCs as refrigerants, thereby further reducing greenhouse gas emissions”

The NAE’s announcement of the new members, including Prasher, signifies a significant milestone in his illustrious career. In addition to his role at Bloom Energy, Prasher serves as an adjunct professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UC Berkeley, where he mentors Ph.D. candidates. Prior to his tenure at Bloom Energy, Prasher held pivotal positions including Associate Lab Director of the Energy Technology Area at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), where he spearheaded research and development across various energy sectors. He spent more than a decade at Intel corporation leading their microelectronics cooling research and development and was part of the founding team of US DOE’s high-risk high-reward funding agency ARPA-E.

His research and development work has spanned the areas of applied physics, science of thermal materials, and technology development related to liquid cooling of chips which is becoming increasingly important for AI Chips and decarbonization technologies, including carbon free hydrogen.

Individuals in the NAE’s newly elected class, including Prasher, will be formally inducted into the organization during their annual meeting on Sept. 29, 2024. To see the full list of new members, you can go to the NAE website.

When Aaron Trimble launched into the 2nd Annual Stars and Strides 5K run Saturday morning, he was carrying several labels – Manager, Maintenance and Facilities for Bloom’s growing manufacturing footprint; Air Force veteran, who was proud to celebrate Veteran’s Day with his fellow vets, and Dad, who was with his son Adam matching him stride for stride.

“It is a special day when we can all get together and be outside, exercise and most of all, support a fantastic cause,” he said when asked why he is running. “As a Veteran myself, it says a lot about the company you work for hosting an event that not only raises dollars, but awareness for the needs of veterans that could certainly use the help.”

Aaron Trimble pictured above, right.

Aaron Trimble pictured above, right.

Bloom’s Stars and Strides event is an example of the company’s efforts to support and integrate with Newark, with the tri-state area and with families like the Trimbles. The Veteran’s Day event was followed by family-friendly activities, celebrating one of the most revered dates on the military calendar.

The Bloom event has grown over the years, with more than double the number of participants from the inaugural event in 2022. This year’s race raised more than $25,000 dollars. All proceeds benefit veteran and active military across the state through beneficiaries Stop Soldier Suicide and the Delaware National Guard Youth Foundation, two charities deeply devoted to military and veterans’ issues in Delaware.

“I would like to thank everyone for their participation and their support for this great initiative,” said Barry Sharpe, head of Bloom’s Delaware operations. “We have deep appreciation for our active military, our veterans and their loyal families. We celebrate their service today and appreciate their commitment to our country throughout the year.”

Following the 5K run and Veteran’s Day, Bloom Energy is sponsoring for the second consecutive year the University of Delaware’s military appreciation football game on November 18, which features a recognition ceremony and activities honoring the selfless sacrifice of veterans and active military.

Bloom Energy’s workforce in Delaware has grown from one employee in 2013 to nearly 800 currently. About 50 employees on its workforce in Delaware are veterans.

NEWARK, DELAWARE – Bloom Energy hosted employees, company executives and a distinguished list of stakeholders at its Newark, Delaware manufacturing center to mark its first decade as a leading Delaware employer and community member on October 10. The delegation of invited guests included Sen. Tom Carper, U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester, and institutional and community partners, including Major General Michael Berry, Dr. Mark Brainard, President, DTCC, and Dr. Dennis Assanis, President, University of Delaware.

“Twenty-two years ago I started the company with a vision of energy abundance,” Bloom’s Founder, Chairman and CEO, KR Sridhar, told guests at the anniversary event. “It started with a vision where sustainability, energy abundance, energy affordability, energy availability, and energy security don’t have to be in conflict. They can all be together. It’s about creating the energy of the future with which our children and grandchildren can have a better life.”

The event was held at the Bloom Manufacturing Center Delaware. In the past decade, the company has transformed a vacant lot that had housed a car manufacturer into a hub for the energy technology of the future. Today, nearly 800 full-time employees help the company produce Energy Servers® for customers across the U.S. and around the world. The production capabilities of the facility have grown to 60 Energy Servers a day, from two a day.

Said Sen. Carper: “We only have one planet, there’s no ‘Planet B.’ This is the only planet we’re going to have. We’re going to protect it and make sure it’s going to be here for generations to come. Bloom is a big part of that.”

“Today is really a celebration about what you’re doing for us as a state,” said Rep. Blunt Rochester. “While we celebrate the innovation, the entrepreneurial spirit, manufacturing and the great jobs that have come to our state, we also celebrate the people who work here.”

KR Sridhar

Powering Progress at University of Delaware

Bloom Energy was the first company to invest and move to University of Delaware’s Science, Technology, and Advanced Research (STAR) Campus located in Newark. Expanding on their existing partnership, University of Delaware and Bloom Energy have entered into an MOU that will focus on research development and student and faculty engagement.

A highlight of the event was the ribbon cutting ceremony naming the Bloom Manufacturing Center Delaware Training Center after Major General Carol A. Timmons Retired Adjutant General, Delaware National Guard, and a special recognition of the employees who have been a part of the Bloom story in Delaware for more than 10 years.

“Our approach was to build on Delaware’s reputation for being nimble and flexible,” said Barry Sharpe, vice president manufacturing, who has overseen the development and operation of the Newark facility since its beginning. “KR told me at the beginning I had three jobs: create the factory of the 21st century, create the workforce of the 21st century and become an integral part of the Delaware community. We have repeated those three objectives consistently over the years and it has helped us stay true to our mission.”

Demand for the Bloom Electrolyzer®, which is also assembled in Delaware, has been growing. The Bloom Electrolyzer has been chosen for transformative green hydrogen projects in the United States and Canada. Last fall, Sen. Tom Carper inaugurated an expansion of the electrolyzer production line, which enabled Bloom to have one gigawatt (1GW) of new production capacity. According to an independent analysis, Bloom now has the biggest electrolyzer manufacturing capacity in the world with two gigawatts (2GW) of expansion potential, double that of its closest rival.

“From this factory came 25,000 power modules, each one as a power station that’s been built over the last ten years right here,” said Sridhar. “We are here for today. We are here for the future.”

Total economic impact to the state from the Bloom operations has exceeded $300 million. The company also has a broad program of community investment and support for training, education and local social programs.

Training a Clean Tech Workforce

The BMCD Training Center is at the heart of the effort to Build the 21st Century Workforce in Delaware. During General Carol A. Timmons tenure as Adjutant General in Delaware, she supported our continued efforts to recruit, hire and train members of the Delaware National Guard to work at Bloom and played a significant role in supporting Bloom Energy‘s Women’s Leadership Network.

It is without question that our institutional partnership with the Delaware National Guard and General Carol A. Timmons has allowed Bloom to grow and play a key in driving Delaware’s economic transformation.  This partnership supported Bloom’s growth to become a high-tech manufacturing hub since locating in the state a decade ago. We are grateful for the trust and confidence the state of Delaware has shown in Bloom and our ability, over the past decade, to become a leader in high-tech manufacturing.

Follow along as we power economic growth and community progress in Delaware and nationally.

Chris Held joined Bloom Energy in 2022 to work in its Remote Monitoring and Control Center operations. But on July 1, he stepped away from the Control Center to lead members of his team in the Bloom Energy & Tarana Wireless Stars and Strides Run, a community run that benefits the Valley Health Foundation.

“A few people on the team like to run and I thought it would be a good team-building exercise so we did it,” says Held, who even had special race shirts made for his running team.

The event, which includes 5K and 10K races as well as a kids’ fun run, is now in its third year. Participation and fundraising have grown every year, and the run has inspired an East Coast equivalent held at Bloom’s Newark, Delaware plant. The San Jose run/walk event, which attracted 1,400 participants in its first year, grew to 1,600 in year two. In year three, after setting a stretch goal of 2,000 registrants, the community run attracted more than 2,200 participants. Of those, 76 participants were Bloom Energy employees like Held and his team.

Stars and Strides has generated $911,500 over its three years of operation. The $300,000 raised in 2022 helped to bring COVID-19 vaccinations and other healthcare services to underserved communities in Santa Clara County and supported the mental welfare of frontline healthcare workers.

The growth of Stars and Strides is a point of pride for Carl Guardino, a former Bloom executive who brought the idea of sponsoring a charity race to Bloom CEO KR Sridhar. “The Valley Health Foundation is a trusted nonprofit with a great tradition of service to the community,” he says. The foundation serves more than 1 million people in Santa Clara County every year, 90% of whom are low income. “Stars and Strides started as a way for Bloom Energy to honor healthcare workers and first responders for their service to the community during the pandemic,” Guardino adds. “It has become much more than that.”

This year, 76 Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office cadets ran as a pack to lead the fun run, and a Sheriff’s Office helicopter landed near the course with two very special guests: Wonder Woman and Superman. “The kids were thrilled when they climbed out of the helicopter,” Guardino says.

For Stephen Lamm, Bloom’s Senior Director of Sustainability, events like Stars and Strides are a key part of the company’s efforts to build resilient communities. “Bloom Energy is committed to improving lives globally,” he says, “and our commercial efforts and employee base are aligned to support and sustain the communities we serve. Whether this is through providing resilient sources of energy to critical infrastructure or leveraging the talent and time of our employees, we seek to drive meaningful impact in all that we do.”

The second annual Bloom Energy Stars and Strides Delaware 5K will take place on Saturday, November 11. This event will benefit the Delaware Center for Homeless Veterans, the Delaware National Guard Youth Foundation, and Stop Soldier Suicide. Bloom Energy has been recognized by the Delaware National Guard for its commitment to hiring veterans and it will be honored for that on July 24 by Delaware Governor John Carney.

The stretch of route 896 near South College Avenue in Newark, Delaware, was an open, empty lot in 2012 There were memories of the auto plant that had once been there, but nothing more. Bloom Energy’s idea to convert the site to do clean energy manufacturing seemed like a bold opportunity. Ten years later, it is an exciting reality, with the company manufacturing its clean energy platform for customers across the United States and overseas. “A lot of people say it’s not possible to address climate change and create jobs,” said Delaware Sen. Tom Carper when he inaugurated yet another expansion at the facility, “but this company is living proof that it’s possible to do both.”

“A lot of people say it’s not possible to address climate change and create jobs … but this company is living proof that it’s possible to do both.”
Sen. Tom Carper

This year Bloom celebrates the 10th anniversary of its Newark Manufacturing and Assembly Center. We’ve grown from one employee in 2012 to more than 750 at the start of 2023. Our employees have successfully delivered our 15,000th Energy Server™, the solid oxide fuel cell equipment that has been the centerpiece of our commitment to making clean, reliable electricity affordable to all.

We’ll be highlighting our decade of achievement with events at our plant and in the community throughout 2023, talking about the work being done in Delaware and the colleagues who make it happen.

We’ll also explain our economic impact on the state. We invested $40.5 million to build a plant devoted to growing the world’s clean energy economy, launching our first assembly line in October 2013. We’ve made additional improvements to the site since then, and now run two shifts to make fuel cells and electrolyzers.

Bloom’s ongoing operations have created a total economic impact of $97 million to the Delaware economy, supporting employment and nearly $4 million in annual tax revenue. From October 2021 through September 2022, our employee compensation topped $46.4 million.

The percentage of our workers who are state residents—81%–is higher than the state average. These are well-paying jobs, with strong potential for career growth. Indeed, several of our first employees now lead aspects of our Delaware production. We invest $6,000 per worker in new employee training, and $2,500 per worker annually in ongoing professional development.

Companies in the U.S. and around the world have taken note of what we build in Delaware.

Our Energy Server, which we now assemble as a ready-to-install unit, is powering data centers, hospitals, universities, major retailers, and other industries. In 2022, a Packaged Energy Server built in Delaware was sent to Italy, where it is helping to power Ferrari’s assembly plant. We’ve even installed Delaware-built fuel cells on a cruise ship, so that it can run on lower-carbon electricity when it is in port. The builders and operators of vessels that carry people and cargo are taking notice.

For all our expansion, however, Bloom has remained deeply rooted in the state and local community. We have developed close relationships with the University of Delaware, which is just across the street, as well as Delaware State University and Delaware Technical Community College, supporting their educational efforts and providing employment opportunities. One of our senior managers sits on the board of directors of the Delaware Foundation on Science and Math Education. Since 2021 alone, Bloom has contributed more than $390,000 to economic development efforts, supporting veterans and bringing energy to underserved communities. Last November, we held our first Stars and Strides 5K run and walk in Newark, raising funds for the Delaware Center for Homeless Veterans and the Delaware National Guard Youth Foundation.

Bloom Energy will continue to support Delaware’s economy and provide career growth for its workers, who this year will send the fuel cells and electrolyzers they make for us to Spain, Portugal and beyond. We hope you will celebrate their achievements with us.

Barry Sharpe is Bloom’s vice president of operations in Newark. Tyrone Jones Is Bloom’s senior manager of policy and public affairs there.

To mark Veterans Day, Bloom Energy employees and their family and friends joined nearly 200 Delaware-area runners for the inaugural Bloom Energy Stars and Strides 5K run and walk in Newark, Delaware, Saturday, November 12. The event raised funds for the Delaware Center for Homeless Veterans and the Delaware National Guard Youth Foundation, key organizations in a state with over 77,000 veterans, 3,500 active military members and 2,700 National Guard families.

“It was great to spend a beautiful fall Saturday with so many employees and families enjoying fun and healthy activities while raising money and respecting our veterans,” said Barry Sharpe, Vice President and General Manager for Manufacturing at Bloom Energy.

Veterans who work at Bloom were among the racers. Aaron Trimble, Manager, Manufacturing Maintenance, and Charles Walton, Director, Manufacturing Engineering and Testing, were also honored after the race at the University of Delaware’s Military Appreciation Day football game.

Veteran's Receiving Awards

“Not only is it an honor to be part of company that is helping to reshape the world of energy, but it is a bigger honor that Bloom supports employees, community and a personal part of my life, veterans,” said Trimble. “Knowing that the Delaware Center for Homeless Veterans (DCHV) and the National Guard Youth Foundation (DNGYF) were the spotlight of the event, brought joy and honor to me to be part of their cause.”

“The day was amazing,” added Walton. “I am very proud that Bloom was able to sponsor an event that both recognized those that have served, and are currently serving, our country as well as supported the local community. I am excited for the impact that Stars and Strides will make in the future.”

Bloom Energy has reached out to veteran’s groups to hire for all positions in its Delaware and California operations, particularly in Field Service. At the start of 2022, Bloom employed 90 protected veterans in the U.S., representing 6 percent of its more than 1,400 U.S. employees then. Bloom works with agencies to identify potential candidates just about to be released from the military, and has hired 10 employees that way. Bloom has also incorporated strategies to hire veterans as potential university interns; 12 percent of its interns this year have been veterans.

The Delaware Stars and Strides, which followed two years of Stars and Strides races at Bloom headquarters in San Jose, Calif., was sponsored by University of Delaware Athletics, Fusion Racing, Crosby Connect International, MDavis, The Newark Partnership, The Newark Morning Rotary, Sherman Engineering, Kendal Corporation, and Little Goat Coffee Roasting Company.

Bloom rounded out its veteran support activities by proudly sponsoring The Newark Moring Rotary Club’s Flags for Heroes event, where 500 American flags are displayed at Newark Reservoir. The event was held on Sunday, November 13, and among those flags displayed, 56 were dedicated to Bloom employees who served in or are active-duty military.

What do you look for in a mentor, and how do you go about asking them to give their time and resources for your professional development?

From interns to senior executives, mentorship is woven into Bloom’s culture. Recently, our Delaware team helped mentor the University of Delaware senior design team to support their project to create a more efficient leak test tool for fuel cell columns.

On Thank Your Mentor Day, we asked Trinidad Sanchez, a human resources generalist at Bloom, and Deia Bayoumi, Vice President of Product Management and a mentor to young professionals for over 16 years, to share what they’ve learned, and thank their mentors.

Deia Bayoumi

Deia Bayoumi, Vice President of Product Management at Bloom, has been both a mentor and mentee throughout his career.

Q: What does mentorship mean to you?

DB: When I first started mentoring, I thought I was teaching young professionals what to do. Then I realized I was learning as much from them as they were from me. It’s a two-way street. Mentoring is a trusting relationship that brings people together. Often, but not always, this involves a more senior colleague (the Mentor) who offers guidance, support and encouragement aimed at developing the skills of a more junior colleague (the Mentee).

Mentorship is about someone encouraging you to find the answers yourself. A good mentor will guide, inspire, critique–not judge–and share ideas and options with you. They will equip you with the resources to do it yourself.

Trinidad Sanchez

Trinidad Sanchez, currently a Human Resources Generalist, first joined Bloom as a University Relations Intern. He proactively reached out to his mentor, Grace Jones.

Q: How did you meet your current mentor?

TS: I had the privilege to join Bloom Energy as a University Relations Intern in the summer, reporting to Andrea Rodriguez. Some of the responsibilities that my role entailed was

  • Create events for interns
  • Help manage the University Relations Budget
  • Create an internal communications system for interns
  • Promote Leadership Speaker Events
  • And most importantly, help manage the Final Showcase

Early on in my internship, I had the chance to meet Grace Jones, a Senior Director of Human Resources here at Bloom Energy. Grace had worked at Bloom for over 10 years. I was interested in Human Resources, and becoming a Human Resource Business Partner was on top of my list.

I asked Grace if she would mentor me, and within a week she told me she would happily mentor me in my development as a Human Resources Professional.

Q: As someone who has been a mentor for 16 years, working with many young professionals, what advice would you give to those looking for a mentor?

DB: Mentorship is one of the best services a company can provide their employees, and it is the best learning experience for both mentor and mentee. This relationship is important.

Create a list of two or three potential mentors, and don’t be afraid to reach out. Ask yourself the following questions when creating your list:

  • Do I look up to this person?
  • Am I able to work well with this person?
  • Can this person guide me toward my professional goals?

Then reach out by email at first, to one at a time, and you will find the right mentor.

TS: Stay curious. Try to learn about different functions and network with different people. As you expand your network, you’ll know more people and become more knowledgeable in how the business operates.

Q: Who would you like to thank on Thank Your Mentor Day?

TS: Grace empowered me as an employee and a young professional. I want to extend my thanks to Grace Jones for her mentorship as I grow as a human resource professional, and for being such a great manager. Also, thank you Bloom Energy for allowing me to grow as a professional while I finish my academic journey

DB: Among the great mentors I have had throughout my career, I would say my mentees were my best teachers. I want to thank our leaders at Bloom for giving me the chance to continue creating opportunities for mentorship at our company. If I had the choice of dedicating as much time as possible to any one thing, it would be mentorship.

San Jose, California is not just where we are headquartered, it is also our home. That’s why we are thrilled to launch the Inaugural Bloom Energy Stars and Strides 5K/10K charity run/walk to be held on Sunday, August 22, 2021. Benefitting the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (VMC) Foundation, the walk/run will kick-off and end at Discovery Meadow at 180 Woz Way in our backyard of downtown San Jose, marking Santa Clara County’s first in-person race since the pandemic began.

I had the pleasure to join San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, VMC Foundation Acting Executive Director Michael Elliott, Santa Clara County Public Health’s Rhonda McClinton-Brown, and Hospital Director Paul Lorenz recently at a press conference to officially announce our inaugural event and share how the funds raised will help VMC continue to provide life-saving services to those in need.

I showed up to the announcement in my own superhero costume (Batman, of course). I grew up admiring Batman on screen and in comic books. Today my heroes look a bit different, often sporting a hospital smock, surgical gown, lab coat or face mask. Throughout this past year, our healthcare workers met an unbearable challenge. Stars and Strides is our opportunity to honor and give back to our front-line heroes for their unwavering service and commitment to our community.

Our three rather ambitious goals are to:

  • Raise and contribute at least a quarter-million dollars for the lifesaving work of the Valley Medical Center Foundation;
  • Attract 4,000 paid participants;
  • Secure 300-400 caring volunteers to ensure our participants have a safe and fun experience

I am hopeful that we can meet these ambitious goals and provide a substantial foundation for successful Stars and Strides charitable races for many years to come!

“We have been far too apart for far too long, and it is wonderful to bring our community together again. I hope you all will join me – walking, running, just enjoying a great opportunity to give back to our wonderful community.”

The Honorable Sam Liccardo
Mayor of San Jose

The VMC Foundation supports 14 healthcare clinics that serve more than one million people every year, nine in ten of whom live within very limited means. Proceeds from this year’s Stars and Strides will help the VMC Foundation bring COVID-19 vaccinations to Santa Clara County’s under-served and vulnerable communities, support the mental well-being of our frontline healthcare workers after a particularly tumultuous year, and bolster services and aide for critical healthcare needs in the community, like pediatric diabetes.

“The people that work at VMC have been running hard for over a year. Our ask is that on August 22nd we come together as a community and run for them. We’re going to run and say thank you for their incredible hard work and sacrifices they have demonstrated this past year.”

Michael Elliott
VMC Foundation Acting Executive Director

We are privileged to have the support of our outstanding co-sponsors for this event including:

Bloom Energy’s Support for the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center

As our communities begin to recover from the global pandemic, Bloom Energy is excited to continue our collaboration with the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center to honor our front-line heroes and the people they serve. The Santa Clara VMC Foundation is an independent, community-driven, nonprofit organization founded to support and protect Silicon Valley’s most vital public healthcare institution – Santa Clara Valley Medical Center Hospital & Clinics – who serve more than one million people every year.

Along with Bay Area organizations and the University of Illinois’ SHIELD T3, we’ve raised more than $500,000 for the VMC Foundation to bring COVID-19 vaccinations to housebound, elderly, disabled and other residents in underserved areas through the purchase of a new mobile unit.

This vaccination roll-out strengthens our commitment to the pandemic relief efforts that started last year with our rapid COVID-19 testing lab with T3 Shield at our manufacturing facility in Sunnyvale. Using an innovative PCR saliva test developed by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the lab processes thousands of tests each day with same-day results, collecting a $5 donation from participating businesses, schools and other entities for each test sample. Following COVID-19 testing and vaccinations, this mobile unit, funded by these generous donations, will continue to serve the community long-term throughout Santa Clara County to provide critical health care services to those in need.

Bloom Energy in the Community

The past year has brought unprecedented challenges to our local and global community. With little preparation, individuals and organizations had to abruptly shift from normal practices to an adjusted lifestyle while taking the precautionary measures to stay healthy during a widespread pandemic. I am incredibly proud of how Bloom Energy employees rose to the occasion and responded to the needs of our community.

Through multiple projects, including a partnership with the state of California and Governor Gavin Newsom, we refurbished more than 1,300 out-of-service ventilators and returned them to service across the U.S., provided emergency power for healthcare facilities, aided testing facilities and powered makeshift, pop-up field hospitals. We also developed a ventilator splitting device to provide ventilation support to four people simultaneously in emergency situations, for which Fast Company recognized us in its 2021 “World Changing Ideas Awards”, and constructed and shipped oxygenator splitting kits to help communities in India with limited oxygenator equipment to treat more patients at the height of the pandemic.

Our local, state and federal governments have urged businesses and organizations to leverage their expertise and resources to help combat the pandemic. And Bloom has done just that, time and time again. Our unwavering leader and CEO, KR Sridhar, said it best at a March 2020 press conference hosted by Governor Newsom:

“What did we do? We simply answered a call.”

KR Sridhar
PhD, Bloom Energy Founder and CEO

It is an honor to work for a company that invests so intently and purposefully in our community. We hope you can join us in August after a challenging and momentous year as we rally our entire community to say thank you to our heroes — the essential workers who have tirelessly and bravely continued to do their jobs in the midst of a global pandemic. We are proud to celebrate and honor their outstanding service to our community.

This year’s inaugural race will spark a yearly tradition for Santa Clara residents, families, and the Bloom Energy team to gather for an event full of exciting and enjoyable festivities. More information regarding the race, details on registration, information to become a sponsor, volunteer or make a donation can be found at: www.starsandstridesrun.com.
